It makes me want to go out and buy all the bad food rather than turn away from it.  It's so tempting and this in-my-face tactic is so teasing.  I have to not think about it in order to not eat it and I've been doing well for the past few months.

Is this school serious? If the university is going to have a health course requirement, it would make sense for all students to have to take it. It was required for everyone who pursued an A.A. at my community college.

"But James DeBoy, chairman of the school's Department of Health and Physical Education, says the requirement is just like courses to help students' communications or math proficiency."

It could also help the skinny students who overindulge in junk food or those who have eating disorders or those who are not physically active. Health shouldn't be only measured by BMI or waist measurement. I also echo that if such a course is not going to be a requirement for all students, then it should be a personal choice for all students.

This article brought back more nostalgia for me than anything else. Granted that I didn't exactly view the show during the 1970s, but I remember vague memories of seeing kids from different cultures represented on there.  I thought the show was truly educational and I even watched it as a teen at times for nostalgic reasons.  I agree with the commentator who wrote that tv shows often reflect the values of society during the time they air the show.  The show naturally reflects values of today, and it's an issue with those who value 70s values more than today's values.  I can understand their point of view since the show was created with a certain purpose and that today's values veer off from that purpose.  It's hard to judge whether today's ways are better than yesteryear's ways, especially when so many commentators have made good points.  I know that I don't agree with being a helicopter parent (it's a modern day term for parents who hover over and are considered "overly" involved in a child's life).  But at the same time, I can't let my toddler child play alone in the yard in today's world.  There's a middle ground I'm attempting to establish in my role as a parent between today's values and decades-old values.  By that token, I don't believe that showing more trash on tv is going to harm today's children either and so I depart with a quoted comment about the origins of one of the sesame street characters:

Folk singer/songwriter Oscar Brand was on the original advisory panel of what became the Children's Television Workshop, the organization that created Sesame Street to help prepare children for school. The children the program was developed for were those children who were likely not to have been read to, exposed to books, learned their numbers and alphabet, etc., i.e., inner city kids. Brand was adamant that Sesame Street needed to look like the neighborhoods and homes these children were living in. He argued for more trash, more graffiti, more of what felt like "home" to these children. He eventually grew so irritated about his inability to sway the rest of the board to his point of view that he resigned in a huff. And a character was named after him. A grouchy character who lives in a garbage can and loves trash. less

This happened in my town and on a bus route assigned to my son's school (thankfully not my son's bus).  From what I have heard, the substitute bus driver made the students get out on a rainy day, and left them without telling anyone.  The children walked back to their houses.  The parents were ticked.

This story astounds me, especially considering how close to home it is.

What is the worst piece of advice you've ever received?

View 513 Answers

Wait until the prices go down before you buy them.

In this case, the advice was about buying airline tickets and the original plan was to buy them six months in advance.  It did not work out that way in 2007.  Oh well.

Meanwhile, I'm having fun reading others' responses to this question.  "Be yourself" annoys quite a few people as well as "just do it."

Utterances that I personally don't like are:
  • Don't worry about it
  • Calm down
  • Who cares what others think (this gets to me when my husband doesn't tell me that we're expecting company and the house is a mess).

Look what's on the yahoo news page.  I have learned from my classes that yes, children can learn how to speak more than one language like a native when exposed to the languages from birth.  One example of being exposed to languages is when one parent speaks German to the baby while the other one speaks Japanese to the baby.  As the article suggests, interaction from as young as possible is the way to go.  What differs from my studies is the magic number.  When I was in college, 12 was the magic number for a person's last chance to learn a language and sound like a native in that language.  According to the article, the new magic number is 7.  Which I do buy, because I also learned from my classes that in cases of siblings who immigrated, 7-year-olds are more likely to sound like natives of the language of the land while 12-year-olds are more likely to speak the new language with an accent for the rest of their lives.  Unfortunately, I don't have much to comment on about the effect of learning a second language through technology.  I still have yet to try that method.  But the best way to learn it is to practice speaking it to someone else who knows the language.

Looking at it from a realistic standpoint, I will most likely take out-of-state vacations for the sole purpose of visiting family within the next five years.  My dream vacations will have to wait until I am either middle-aged or an elder if I do take them.

That actually happened today, right before I was about to check out at the library.

Before arriving at the library, I turned the corner of the street and saw a horse-drawn carriage.  It was stopped before a traffic light, carrying a bridal party with a row of cars behind it.  Such a site amazed me.  The sky was very gray and I felt occasional sprinkles.  My eldest son and I stepped down the stairs into the basement of the library (for that is where the children's room is located) and returned our materials.  It didn't take long for my son to find two movies to check out (one is about poisonous animals and the other one is Lilo and Stitch).  He checked out the movies on his card.  Meanwhile, the rain poured down ferociously.  I finally picked out three books and a dvd.  And, well, one can guess what happened next.

Here I was, complaining internally that I didn't get to check out books.  We waited about 15 minutes, before I decided to just leave.  One staff member remained calm and cheerful throughout the ordeal while another one couldn't find anything and spoke of closing the library early (it was one something and the library closed at five).  I figure that we'll just come back Monday morning and I will spend some time searching for a book for each of my children again.

Leaving the drenched parking lot and splashing along the streams on the road, I approached the same previous intersection with no working traffic light.  A single cop directed traffic.  As I turned, I thought of the wedding party in their horse-drawn carriages and sincerely hoped that this weather did not ruin their day.

It passed.  Now to see what happens to the tobacco industry.  Will it cause their sales to go up or will business go downhill?

One of my parents was a lifelong smoker.  I don't know how old Dad was when he started smoking, but he has quit on-and-off throughout my life.  Some periods lasted a few years.  Every time he quit, he did it the cold turkey way. Currently, he hasn't smoked since his bypass years ago.

Because of Dad's habit, I decided to never smoke.  I don't want to be stuck with a habit that I'd never quit.

Two days and two nights without internet

Our connection got cut off on Sunday.  We spent the last few months connecting to the 'net through an internet card.  It's pretty much dial-up connection costing us $60 a month.  Last week, we got notice in the mail from the provider that company was being taken over by another company starting next month (another company being a huge chain that John and I did not get along with years ago).  We found out towards the end of last week that we can get high speed internet from the local cable company for $40 a month.  For the first time ever, cable installation guys showed up on time (10:15 for a 10-12 slot) to hook up our internet.  As much as I hate to put it this way, I felt so neglected without being able to check my email and current events on the web.  It's really the best way I have to look up current news since we have no cable, no converter box, and no print media subscription.  It's so good to be back people!

Oh, and I checked out a book at the library today with a funny title:  I Was A Really Good Mom before I Had Kids.  Can't wait to read it.

This bill hasn't been passed as of yet, but it's making its rounds through the branches of government for votes.  If it passes:

-no advertising within a 1000 ft of schools and playgrounds
-bigger warning sign on both sides of packages
-elimination of vending machines except in adult-only facilities
-brands will no longer sell cigarettes flavored with candy, herbs, and spices.  "Light" and "mild" will also be eliminated from store shelves.
-no tobacco sponsorships of sports and entertainment events.
-no giveaways on non-tobacco items if one purchases a tobacco item
-point-of-sale advertising will be limited to adult-only facilities.
-FDA will have authority over the ingredients of tobacco products
-retailers who sell to minors will face higher penalties

I'll be curious to see if this measure cuts back on the number of smokers since that's what the lawmakers are designing to make it to do.

No matter what language you speak, you've probably come across words or phrases in another language that sound better than their equivalents in your native tongue. What's your favorite word or phrase in a foreign language?

View 507 Answers

There's not favorite word or phrase in a foreign language that appeals to me.  Scratch that.  The Spanish pronunciation of "chocolate" sounds cool.  Otherwise, I'd say that French is my favorite language.  I never signed up for a French instruction course, but the language sounds very beautiful.

Ok, I can see now why unhealthy, individualistic nines might mistype as fives.

www.enneagraminstitute.com/forum/topic.asp
*second post from bottom.

Misidentifications should address what happens when nines feel that they can't trust people.  It's obviously drastically different from a five's mistrust, but still it doesn't mean that nines are people who continue to trust and trust after being screwed over.

*And yeah this is a biased post, because I am a nine who has trust issues.

Without a doubt, it was Cinderella.  I can't say that I know for sure why, but riches to rags stories and rags to riches stories still grab me to this day.  Another probable reason is that I could probably relate to having a nice, pleasant personality.  All I know was that the movie was magic to me back then.
